In the UK, you and someone else can totally use online banking for your shared account. Most banks have websites or apps that let both of you handle things online.
Firstly both of you have to sign up for online banking with your own usernames and passwords, and then link them to the joint account.
Once you're set up, you can check how much money is in the account, see what transactions happened, move money around, and do other bank stuff online. It's pretty handy for everyone with access to the joint account.
