After Chemical Bank introduced the first ATM in 1969, many other commercial banks in the United States quickly caught on to the potential of this technology. By the early 1970s, banks all over the country started installing their own ATMs.
The success of the first ones showed how people liked the idea of convenient, self-service banking, and other banks wanted in on it too. Throughout the 1970s, more and more banks added ATMs to their branches. This wasn't just happening in the United States – banks in other countries were also getting on board with this technology.
