Scammers are using the promise of a free NFT airdrop or NFT voucher to lure people into revealing the seed phrases to their crypto wallets.
Users of crypto hardware and software wallets, such as Ledger, Trezor, Exodus and Trust Wallet are finding messages in the apps stating that an NFT has been airdropped to their wallet and that they need to click a link to claim it.
If they follow the URL they’ll reach a page which asks them to input their wallet seed phrase to confirm ownership before they receive the ‘gift’.
However, by revealing the 12-24 pass phrase you’ll be giving the scammers complete control of your crypto wallet and you’ll find your funds are quickly drained to wallets controlled by the fraudsters.
NFT gift claims to come from AGIX
One of the latest NFT scams claims to have been sent from a platform called AGIX and an extension that tallies with the airdrop. I’m not going to detail the exact URL here.
It’s important to note that the genuine AGIX is a utility token used by SingularityNET, a platform which aims to create “a decentralised, democratic, inclusive and beneficial Artificial General Intelligence”.
The AGIX NFT scam is complete unrelated to this platform or the token associated with it.
The landing page to the scam platform has been designed to replicate the genuine SingularityNET website and could easily trick someone not familiar with the importance of keeping seed phrases private.
The fake platform claims that “75,000 Eligible Wallers” have received the airdrop and features a ‘Claim Rewards’ button underneath.
Clicking the button triggers a pop-up window asking the visitor to input their seed phrase in order to secure their reward.
Never reveal your seed phrase
If you receive a message like this in your crypto wallet you should delete it immediately without clicking on the link.
Also, look out for variants of the scam using different brands, platforms or offers as the AGIX NFT scam will be just one of hundreds operating at any given time.
Any platform that asks you for your seed phrase will be a scam. This information should never be given to anyone else, and certainly not transmitted online.
